Okay, You’re Engaged… Now, Where Do You Find Your Wedding Vendors?!
You’ve got the ring. You’ve started dreaming. And maybe that Pinterest board already has 847 pins. Now comes the BIG question:
Where do you actually find the people you’ll trust to bring your wedding vision to life?
The good news? There’s no single “right” place! The Midwest has an incredible wedding community, and your dream team might be one scroll, conversation, referral, or wedding show away.
But every search method has its PROS…and a few things to WATCH FOR.
Many venues provide preferred or recommended vendor lists.
Pro: These professionals may already understand the property, policies, layout, logistics, and staff—which can make wedding day even smoother.
Watch For: Ask how someone becomes “preferred.” Some lists are based on proven experience, while others may involve paid advertising, partnerships, exclusivity, or other arrangements.
Know someone who recently got married? ASK THEM!
Pro: You can get honest firsthand feedback about what it was actually like working with a professional.
Watch For: Their perfect vendor doesn’t necessarily equal your perfect vendor. Budgets, personalities, expectations, styles, and priorities vary tremendously.
Already found one vendor you LOVE? Ask them who they enjoy working alongside.
Pro: Wedding professionals see each other when couples don’t—during setup, behind the scenes, when timelines change, and when something unexpected happens. They know who shows up.
Watch For: Vendors naturally build professional relationships and referral networks. Ask why they recommend someone for you and how they align to your personality, style, and budget. See more at “Your Venue”.
Yep—Google still matters!
Pro: Websites, portfolios, business information, and reviews can help you build a much bigger picture of a company.
Watch For: Don’t look only at the star rating. Read the actual reviews. Look for patterns in what couples consistently praise—or consistently mention as a concern.
See a wedding that makes you stop scrolling? Check those vendor tags!
Pro: Great for exploring portfolios, aesthetics, personalities, real weddings, and behind-the-scenes content.
Watch For: A gorgeous Instagram feed doesn’t tell you everything about the client experience. Beautiful work still needs to be backed by professionalism, communication and consistency.
TikTok can give you a completely different look behind the scenes.
Pro: Video allows you to experience a vendor’s personality, expertise, approach, advice, and actual work.
Watch For: Going viral doesn’t necessarily equal wedding experience. Followers and views shouldn’t replace research.
Local wedding groups can be fantastic for discovering professionals and hearing directly from other couples.
Pro: Lots of local recommendations and firsthand experiences—especially when you’re searching for something specific.
Watch For: Be aware of those with false representation. There is a difference to a true tenured wedding professional, rather than those who claim to be. There are diamonds in the rough, but make sure they are honest about where they are in their experience! Get the contract!
Get off the screen and meet people! 🙌
Pro: You can meet multiple professionals in one day, see their work, ask questions, and discover whether your personalities click.
Watch For: Don’t let a limited-time special make the decision for you. Gather information, ask questions, research afterward, and book when you feel confident.
Love looking at real weddings? Pay attention to the credits!
Pro: Publications and blogs can introduce you to talented professionals while showing how multiple vendors worked together to create an actual wedding.
Watch For: Being featured is a great introduction—not a substitute for doing your own research.
Sometimes you want to actually hear what a professional has to say.
Pro: Long-form conversations can reveal personality, philosophy, expertise, communication style, and how someone approaches weddings.
Watch For: Being a fantastic content creator doesn’t automatically make someone the right wedding professional for you. Research their experience and have your own conversation.
VOW was created to help couples discover the people behind Nebraska’s wedding community while providing honest, experience-based education along the way.
Explore our vendor spotlights, venue tours, conversations, planning resources, podcasts, and VOW Vendor Directory as another tool for building your wedding team.
And here’s the BIGGEST thing we want you to remember:
Don’t choose someone simply because they’re popular, have thousands of followers, appear first on Google, were recommended 47 times in a Facebook group, or worked with your best friend’s cousin’s sister. 😉
Look at their work.
Read their reviews.
Visit their website.
Ask about their experience.
Understand their pricing.
Review the contract.
Schedule the consultation.
And pay attention to how they make you feel.
Your wedding professionals will be beside you during some of the most personal, emotional, exciting—and occasionally chaotic—moments of your wedding journey.
